* A dilated fundus exam is an additional procedure using specialized instrumentation to conduct a more extensive evaluation of the internal structure of the eye. The eye must be dilated to permit a dilated fundus exam to be conducted. In some states a dilated fundus exam is a mandatory part of a routine eye exam.
